Topic #8

Generative AI vs AI

AI is the broad field of building systems that perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence. Generative AI is one specific capability within that field — producing new content. Every generative AI system is AI; most AI systems are not generative.

The Umbrella Relationship

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
└── Machine Learning (ML)
    └── Deep Learning (DL)
        └── Generative AI
            ├── LLMs (text)
            ├── Diffusion models (images)
            └── Speech models (audio)

This nesting matters — it's the basis for the next two comparison notes (vs ML and vs DL).

Non-Generative AI — Real Examples

SystemTaskGenerative?
Spam filterClassify email as spam/not spamNo — discriminative
Fraud detection modelScore a transaction's riskNo — discriminative
Recommendation engineRank products by relevanceNo — discriminative/ranking
ChatGPTProduce a written responseYes — generative
Chess engine (e.g. traditional minimax-based)Select the best moveNo — search/decision-based, not content generation

Why This Distinction Matters Practically

"We're adding AI to our product" is vague. "We're adding an LLM-based summarization feature" tells you the actual engineering tradeoffs: cost per request, latency, hallucination risk, prompt design — none of which apply the same way to a simple classification model. Precision in this vocabulary avoids miscommunication with engineering teams and stakeholders.

Common Mistakes

  • Calling any AI-powered feature "generative AI," even when it's a classifier or recommender under the hood
  • Assuming generative AI is a strict upgrade over other AI approaches — for tasks like fraud scoring or ranking, a discriminative model is usually more accurate, cheaper and faster

Interview Relevance

"Is a recommendation system generative AI?" is a good screening question — the correct answer is no (it ranks/selects from existing items rather than producing new content), and explaining why signals real conceptual clarity.

Practice Question

A company says they use "AI" for three features: résumé screening, an internal chatbot, and search-result ranking. Which, if any, are generative AI?
